Abed Azrié

Abed Azrié was born in Aleppo, Syria, at the meeting point of many musical traditions; between east and west, Aleppo is at the doorway to what was once Mesopotamia, one of the cradles of civilization. While travelling, Abed discovered Paris. He has been living there since 1967. Abed Azrié puts an avant-garde twist on his songs, and thus is able to revive such legends as the Epic of Gilgamesh, Sufi poetry, classic Arab poetry as well as Andalucian songs.

In "Suerte," Abed Azrié tried to evoke the energy of what is known in Spanish as duende and in the Arab world as tarab - an expression born of Judeo, Christian, and Arabian gypsies which describes the process by which the body is completely taken over by the energy of the music. In search of the Andalusian soul, two voices and two languages combine over Arabian, Flamenco, and Western instrumental styles - the fusion of modern with eternal, a celebration of dance, joy, and women. For the lyrics, Abed selected a series of exquisite eleventh century Andalusian poems, or wuwwashahat, that utilise a multi-metrical style developed in Spain around the ninth century.
This is a live recording of a concert in Toulouse in June 1998.
