In the XIIIth century, the Franciscans founded the "laudesi" brotherhoods, these were singers whose repertoire was both contemplative and devotional. Since laymen were not allowed to play an active role in the liturgy, during those times, the Franciscans conceived "extra-liturgical" ceremonies in which they could partake. The "laudesi" sang in patron saint processions, certain Holy Week ceremonies, as well as prayer evenings.
